I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I have been battling Covid for over a week with every possible symptom I’ve ever heard of. The good news is that since I haven’t been able to taste or smell anything for 5 days I’ve been able to lose those extra few pounds I gained over the holidays! There’s something about everything tasting like hot or cold water and hot or cold cardboard that makes eating not worth the effort – and when you have Covid everything is an effort. Why waste the Dove dark chocolate? Denying myself is easier when I don’t have a taste for something.
That got me thinking about how true this is spiritually too. You’re not hungry for things you’ve never developed a taste for. But it’s hard not to indulge yourself when it’s something that is very satisfying. Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Once you’ve tasted of God’s goodness it’s hard not to want more and more of it. And he offers an all-you-can-eat buffet of everything you can fit onto your plate with no limits on how many times you can come back to his table!
So how is your spiritual appetite? Have you lost your taste for the things of God? His goodness is not determined by how good your life is. It doesn’t depend on other people, it depends on one person – Jesus. He came to earth to become one of us so he could die for our sins and came back to life so we can have the hope of heaven. That’s as good as it gets! If he never did one other thing for us, he would still be worth following. Taste and see. Grab your bib and a Bible and dig in!
